Substituting components, omitting a gypsum layer or altering an assembly detail can affect its rating, making the listed system and project documents more important than simply specifying “fire-rated drywall.”

Commercial buildings can contain more than one major occupancy, such as business, mercantile, assembly or industrial uses within the same structure. Where the Ontario Building Code requires these occupancies to be separated, a fire separation with the prescribed fire-resistance rating limits fire spread from one use into another. The required rating depends on the specific occupancy combination and building conditions rather than a universal drywall thickness.
Corridors forming part of an exit-access system can require fire-separated construction so occupants retain a protected route toward an exit during a fire. Rated corridor walls must maintain continuity at intersections, ceilings and other boundaries defined by the applicable design. Adding Type X gypsum only to the visible lower portion of a partition does not create a compliant rated corridor if the specified assembly must continue above the ceiling.
Elevator, mechanical and other vertical shafts can connect multiple storeys and create potential pathways for smoke and fire movement. Shaft-wall systems commonly use approximately 25.4 mm (1 in.) shaftliner panels with C-H, C-T or other proprietary steel framing as components of listed assemblies. These systems allow construction from one side in applications where conventional two-sided drywall installation may be impractical.
Electrical rooms, mechanical rooms and other service spaces can require fire separations depending on the equipment, building classification and applicable code provisions. The required enclosure may include rated walls, ceilings, doors and protected penetrations functioning together rather than drywall alone. Identifying the required rating before framing allows the correct listed gypsum assembly to be constructed from the outset instead of attempting to upgrade an ordinary partition afterward.

A fire-resistance rating belongs to the complete tested assembly rather than to Type X board by itself. ULC-listed designs identify the required gypsum layers, framing members, stud spacing, insulation where applicable, fasteners and construction details used to achieve a specified rating. A 1-hour or 2-hour wall therefore has to reproduce the applicable design instead of combining individually fire-resistant products without a tested configuration.
2. Maintaining The Specified Gypsum Layering
Rated assemblies can require multiple gypsum layers on one or both sides of the framing, with joints positioned according to the listed design. A common Type X panel thickness is 15.9 mm (5/8 in.), but adding another 15.9 mm layer does not automatically convert a 1-hour wall into a 2-hour wall. Layer count, panel type, orientation, attachment and framing must remain consistent with the tested assembly.
3. Installing Fasteners To The Tested Schedule
Screw type, length and spacing form part of the construction represented by a rated design. Successive gypsum layers may require longer fasteners to penetrate through the underlying board and achieve the specified engagement with steel or wood framing. Increasing fastener spacing for convenience or using an incompatible screw can depart from the assembly that established the published fire-resistance rating.
4. Preserving Continuity At Wall Intersections
Fire-rated walls must remain continuous where they meet floors, structural decks, intersecting partitions and other construction boundaries. Head-of-wall details are especially important where the structure above can deflect independently of the partition. Tested joint systems can accommodate specified movement while maintaining fire-resistance performance, preventing an otherwise rated wall from ending at an unprotected perimeter gap.

Pipes, conduit and cables passing through a rated gypsum wall interrupt the protective membrane and require an appropriate tested penetration firestop system. These systems can combine firestop sealant, mineral wool, collars or other listed components depending on the penetrating item and opening geometry. The required system is selected from its tested listing rather than filling every annular space with generic fire caulking.
Recessed electrical boxes remove gypsum from the wall membrane and can affect the performance of a rated assembly when their size, spacing or arrangement falls outside the tested design. Listed firestop putty pads or other approved protection can be required around boxes in certain conditions. Opposing boxes also need to follow the separation and protection requirements of the applicable assembly rather than being installed back-to-back for convenience.
Valves, dampers and other serviceable components sometimes require access through a fire-rated gypsum enclosure. An ordinary access door cannot automatically be substituted because the opening must maintain the required protection. Fire-rated access panels are available with ratings such as 1 or 2 hours for appropriate applications, but the selected product, wall construction and installation details must correspond with the required assembly and listing.
A rated wall containing a doorway depends on more than the surrounding Type X gypsum. The opening can require a labelled fire door, compatible frame, hardware and other components selected for the required opening-protective rating. Gypsum termination and framing around the jamb and head must follow the rated construction details so an otherwise compliant fire separation is not compromised at one of its largest openings.
A fire separation is a construction assembly that restricts the spread of fire between spaces and may or may not require a specific fire-resistance rating. A firewall is a more specialized code-defined assembly intended to subdivide a building so portions can be considered separate buildings for certain code purposes. The terms are therefore not interchangeable, and ordinary rated gypsum partitions should not automatically be described as firewalls.
CAN/ULC-S101 is a Canadian standard used to determine the fire-endurance performance of building assemblies such as walls, floors, roofs and structural elements. Assemblies are exposed to a prescribed time-temperature fire test and evaluated against applicable performance criteria. Ratings such as 1 hour or 2 hours describe the tested assembly's fire-resistance performance—not how long an actual building fire will necessarily take to penetrate the wall.
The F-rating expresses how long a tested firestop system prevents flame passage through a penetration under the applicable fire test. Firestop systems can also carry other classifications depending on their tested performance, such as temperature-related ratings. The required system must match details including the wall construction, penetrating item, opening size and annular space rather than being selected from its F-rating alone.
A head-of-wall joint system protects the linear opening where the top of a rated partition meets the floor or roof construction above. Listed systems can incorporate mineral wool, firestop sealant and movement-capable components while permitting the specified compression or extension. This allows structural deflection to occur without leaving an unprotected gap across the top of the fire separation.
A fire damper is a listed device installed where qualifying ducts or air-transfer openings penetrate certain fire separations. When activated, it closes to restrict fire from travelling through the duct opening. The drywall contractor does not substitute fire caulking for the damper; instead, the gypsum opening and surrounding construction must coordinate with the damper's listed installation and the mechanical system design.
