Crack shape and location provide clues about what has moved beneath the finished surface. Fine cracks confined to a joint may originate from movement between adjacent panels, while diagonal cracking extending from the corner of a door or window can indicate movement concentrated around the framed opening. Identifying whether the failure involves only the surface compound, joint reinforcement or gypsum board prevents an ineffective cosmetic fill over an active defect.
A small visible dent can involve only compressed face paper, whereas a harder impact may fracture the gypsum core beyond the apparent perimeter of the mark. Damaged areas are checked for soft edges, delamination and broken material before determining the patch dimensions. Where the core has lost integrity, cutting back to solid gypsum creates a more dependable repair boundary than applying compound over crushed board.
A circular bump or broken spot over a fastener can develop when the board and framing move independently, particularly as wood framing undergoes normal moisture-related dimensional change. Simply driving the exposed nail or screw deeper does not necessarily stabilize the sheet. The surrounding panel is checked for movement so a new drywall screw can engage sound framing near the failed fastener before the surface defect is rebuilt.
Chips and cracks along projecting wall corners can indicate deformation of the corner reinforcement beneath the finished surface. Metal corner bead may become bent or loosen from its attachment, while vinyl or paper-faced bead can suffer different forms of localized damage. Determining whether the bead remains straight and firmly attached establishes whether only the surface needs rebuilding or a damaged section of corner reinforcement must be replaced.

1. Installing Backing Behind Larger Openings
Openings too large for a direct compound repair need mechanical support behind the existing board. Wood backing strips can be inserted through the opening and fastened through the surrounding drywall, creating an attachment surface for a fitted gypsum-board patch. This prevents the replacement piece from flexing independently and provides a solid perimeter before reinforcement materials are applied.
2. Reinforcing Cracks And Patch Seams
Repair seams require reinforcement because joint compound alone has limited ability to resist recurring tensile movement. Fibreglass mesh tape provides an open-grid reinforcement that is commonly paired with setting-type compound, while paper joint tape develops strength when properly embedded in compound. The reinforcement is extended beyond the immediate defect so stresses are distributed across a larger section of the repaired surface.
3. Rebuilding Damaged Corner Bead
When an outside corner has been physically deformed, the affected bead section can be exposed, cut back to stable material and replaced rather than burying the distortion beneath additional compound. Replacement bead must align with the existing corner on both wall planes; even a 2–3 mm projection can require excessive compound build-up and leave a visibly widened or uneven corner after decoration.
4. Stabilizing Failed Drywall Joints
A recurring seam crack requires correction of the failed joint rather than another surface application over the existing crack. Loose compound and compromised reinforcement are removed until a stable bond is reached, the underlying board is secured where necessary, and the joint is re-reinforced. This sequence addresses both mechanical movement and joint failure before the surface is rebuilt, reducing the likelihood of the crack following the same seam again.

A repair can be structurally sound yet remain visible if compound terminates abruptly around its perimeter. Successive applications are feathered progressively beyond the reinforced area, with pressure concentrated toward the outer edge to reduce the transition between compound and the original wall plane. Wider feathering is particularly important over butt-style patch seams because there is no recessed factory taper available to accommodate material thickness.
High ridges, lap marks and tool lines are easier to remove between applications than after the final coat has hardened. A 150 mm (6 in.) joint knife may be suitable for initial localized work, while wider 250–300 mm (10–12 in.) knives help extend subsequent coats over a broader area. Removing prominent imperfections before another application limits unnecessary compound thickness and reduces final sanding.
Drywall abrasives in approximately the 120–220 grit range can be selected according to the stage and condition of the repair. Excessive sanding can expose or fuzz the surrounding face paper, create depressions in softer joint compound or reveal reinforcement beneath the surface. A work light directed across the wall at a shallow angle helps reveal scratches, ridges and perimeter edges that may be difficult to detect under normal room lighting.
Fresh joint compound and existing painted drywall absorb coatings differently, which can produce visible dull areas known as flashing even when the repair itself is flat. Applying an appropriate drywall primer or primer-sealer equalizes surface porosity before repainting. This final substrate preparation is especially important under eggshell, satin and higher-sheen paints, which tend to reveal changes in surface texture and reflectivity more readily than flat finishes.
A California patch, also called a butterfly patch, uses the face paper of a replacement gypsum-board piece as an integral flange around the repair. It is best suited to relatively small openings where the surrounding board remains firm and flat. Because the retained paper overlaps the opening, the method eliminates separate joint tape around the patch perimeter while still requiring careful compound application to avoid creating a visible raised area.
Bubbling can occur when joint tape or damaged face paper loses proper contact with the compound beneath it. Torn drywall can also expose brown kraft paper that absorbs moisture and may blister when coated directly with water-based material. Severely torn areas are typically trimmed back to firmly bonded paper and treated with an appropriate problem-surface sealer before the repair layers are applied.
Low-angle illumination creates what the drywall industry calls critical lighting: light travels nearly parallel to the surface and exaggerates small changes in plane, texture and porosity. Large windows and strong directional lighting can therefore reveal imperfections that are virtually invisible under diffuse illumination. Inspecting a repaired surface under conditions resembling the room's final lighting helps identify these defects before repainting.
The opening around an electrical box should not be indiscriminately packed with patching material because electrical boxes and their surrounding wall assemblies have installation requirements independent of cosmetic drywall repair. Where excessive gypsum has broken away, the repair must preserve access to the box and avoid covering its enclosure or devices. Electrical defects discovered behind the damaged board should be addressed by the appropriate electrical trade rather than concealed by the drywall repair.
Mechanical sanding produces very fine particles from dried joint compound, which commonly contains calcium carbonate, gypsum and other mineral constituents. Dust can migrate through HVAC returns and settle well beyond the immediate work area, so localized containment, dust-extraction sanding equipment and a suitable vacuum fitted with a high-efficiency filter can substantially reduce airborne material compared with uncontrolled dry sanding.
